'We Spoke Out' is a collection stories relating to the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the Nazi Germany State's systematic assault on Jews between 1933 and 1945 - what the Nazis called the 'Final Solution of the Jewish Question in Europe'. The Jews were targeted for complete extinction and six million of them died. Slavs, 'asiatics', Gypsies and other groups were also exterminated in industrialised death camps. In the 1950s America was trying to improve post war relations with Germany. The suggestion in this book is that young Americans learned about the anti-facsist war and about the death of millions in concentration camps not at school but through comic books. Batman, the X-Men, Captain America, Sgt. Rock and other comics had plots involving Nazi anti-semitism and genocide. Artist Neal Adams, Holocaust scholar Rafael Medoff, and comics historian Craig Yoe collaborated to produce this reminder of that period, with work from EC Comics, Marvel, DC, et al, in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s The book incudes words and pictures by Stan Lee, Richard Medoff , Craig Yoe, Joe Kubert, Harry Harrison, Wally Wood, Vincent Napoli, Gene Colan, Gil Kane, Dan Adkins, Neal Adams, Chris Claremont, George Evens, Roger McKenzie, Don Perlin, Sal Buscema, Robert Kanigher, John Severin, Ric Estrada, Carmine Infantino ,Joe Rubenstein, Al Feldstein, Bernie Kriegstein, Dave Cochrum and Bob Wiacek.. Not until I was around seventeen or so in the late fifty's was I made aware of what had taken place. Not through comics but at a left-wing political group showing of film taken at the first opening of the concentration camps by British and American forces at the end of the war. Not something one could forget. The terrible scale of the inhumanity exposed does leave me wondering if it can be appropriately deal with by adventure comics. But I have not read this book. The one story I have read is the Bernie Kriegson/Al Feldstein 'Master Race' which does deal with the subject in a way that sticks in the mind. Thursday April 12th Today is Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance day) On Sunday the 15th the Board of Deputies of British Jews will be marking Yom HaShoah with a joint ceremony & lighting our yellowcandle at The National Holocaust Memorial, The Dell.
