Stephen Hickman was an American SF and fantasy artist, sculptor and author, with over 350 book and magazine covers to his credit.
Born in Washington, D.C. the son of a father in the foreign service, he was widely travelled before they settled in Alexandria, Virginia where he attended Francis Hammond High School with its art program directed by Fletcher Proctor. Here Hickman had the equivalent of eight years of art tuition. After graduating Hickman spent two years at Richmond Professional Institute where he shared classes with Michael Kaluta and Phil Trumbo
In 1967 the 18 year old, Hickman went to the Comic Con by the Academy of Comic-Book Fans and Collectors. Here, Hickman met legendary fantasy illustrators, Frank Frazetta and Roy G. Krenkel, who encouraged him to pursue a career as an artist.
Hickman's career began in 1972 with a job designing t-shirts
In 1974, Hickman was introduced by Neal Adams to Charles Volpe, art editor at Ace Books. .Volpe bought the printing rights to work from Hickman's portfolio, and later commissioned paintings which were used for reprints in the Classics of Science-Fiction series
His novel The Lemurian Stone was published in 1988. This work introduced the Pharazar Mythos, which was the basis for several major paintings.
Hickman illustrated the stories of Robert A. Heinlein, H. P. Lovecraft, J. R. R. Tolkien,[2] Anne McCaffrey, and Andre Norton, Larry Niven's Man-Kzin Wars novels and Steven Brust's Dragaera series. The United States Postal Service used his series of space fantasy postage stamps.
Hickman’s awards include a World Science Fiction Convention's Hugo Award, 6 Chesley Awards for Achievement in Science Fiction and Fantasy. two gold awards from the Spectrum Anthology. and the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy. 1994 Hugo Award, for Best Original Art Work
