28/02/2023  Dilbert is an American comic strip written and illustrated by scott adams, first published on April 16, 1989. The humour strip is about office life and interactions between its range of characters.

There have been Dilbert books, an animated television series, video games and merchandise items.

In 1997, Adams received the National Cartoonists Society Rueben Award and the Newspaper Comic Strip Award.

Dilbert appears online and as of 2013 was published daily in 2,000 newspapers in 65 countries and 25 languages.

In February 2023, hundreds of publications, followed by the strip's syndicator, Andrews McMeel Syndication dropped the comic due to Adams, on YouTube, making statements widely regarded as racist.

Adams has said he regards this as an attack on ‘free speech’.

But free speech can have a cost as the “shouting fire in a crowded theatre” metaphor suggests.

For research I looked at scores of Dilbert strips. None raised even the hint of a smile. Could just be me but I am more surprised at Adams’ success than at his recent setback.
